Work Overview
In Creeping Shadows, I had a very specific sonic image in mind. I wanted to create a soundscape of elemental force, of slowly evolving clouds of sound. At the beginning of the piece, the pianist plays at the lowest regions of the piano with the sustain pedal depressed creating a blurry texture, from which drones and ringing tones emerge. As the piece unfolds, waves of sound build to a series of ecstatic climaxes with the performer playing as loudly as possible over the whole instrument.
At key points in Creeping Shadows, the hazy texture is punctured by chords bursting onto the musical surface before falling back to be engulfed by the piano roar again.
