Figure 8 was commissioned by the Cranbrook Guitar Orchestra in Sydney and first performed in 1993. The work features the use of motifs that are idiomatic to the fretboard and melodies that explore the full scope of the guitar ensemble from the low range of the acoustic bass guitar to the high range of the transposing requinto guitars. The title refers to the time signature and the recurring rhythm of quavers grouped in the form 3+3+2.
Instrumentation: Requinto guitars, acoustic guitars in 2 parts, electric bass guitar or double bass ("probable line-up would be single electric bass guitar, 3 or more standard guitars on each of Guitar II & III parts, and slightly fewer of the transposing requinto guitars on the top line of the music"). Could also be played by guitar quartet.
Duration: 7 min.
Commission note: Commissioned and first performed by the Cranbrook Guitar Orchestra.
