Work Overview

Five Short Pieces were written for submission to the Australian Music Examination Board for inclusion in their Guitar Syllabus. They are an attempt to give young students some easy but worthwhile material in a modern idiom. No. 1 is an exercise in maintaining a clear melody with the thumb, No. 2 (the easiest of the set) needs good legato and control of chords. No. 3 is very rhythmic and requires a clean L.H. to achieve the dissonances on the bass strings. No. 4 is more romantic and should be played with much rubato and No. 5 concentrates on crossing from thumb to fingers in the R.H. and on syncopated chords.
