Quadrivium 1 was written for - and premiered at - an art gallery opening, and as such, the visual drama of percussion music forms a conceptual basis for much of the work, whether that's a rapid beating on the marimba that's barely audible, or the circular nature of the percussion set-up (the audience surrounded the musicians at the first performance). And as the opening was for an exhibition of glass art, I wanted to create a sonic equivalent of the works on display - some delicate & detailed, others heavy and solid, all exploring the plasticity and potential of the medium.
Instrumentation: Vibraphone, marimba, glockenspiel, crash cymbal, crotales, crystal glasses.
Duration: 10 min.
Difficulty: Advanced — Temporally-notated score
Commission note: Quadrivium 1 was commissioned by Paul Genny of the Quadrivium Art Gallery, Sydney, for the opening of "Glass", January 1997
