Work Overview

Mercury 3 Variations is a 2017 work build around NASA voice-recordings of conversations between astronaut Alan Shepard amd mission control during the 1961 sub-orbital flight of Freedom 7. Musically, the work is a set of variations-within-variations, as the material elements appear, transform and disappear over three iterations or 'orbits'. I am grateful to the recordists BiancaBothaPure, Glaneur de Sons, Lenguaverde and Snotch for sounds captured on Mont Jerbier de Jonc, at the Chinese border with North Korea and at a rooftop café in Leh Ladakh, India, as well as other locations.
