Work Overview

The shaping of the phrases and the changing tempo indicators are needed to convey the free and gentle motion of the waves. In the first and third sections, the repeated D in the bass and the D pedal point in the meno mosso section serve as a reminder of the underlying power and endurance of the sea which is far beyond human limitations. This changes to F and G flat (at the end) signifying an ever-changing sea. The colours
are understated throughout the piece. The use of the sustaining pedal and/or una corda pedal to convey an Impressionistic feel is needed in the second, meno mosso and fourth sections.
