Work Overview
An element of danger lurks throughout this work: a bushfire is very unpredictable where a wind change can whip up a full-blown bushfire from just a small ember. The pp leggiero touch at the beginning and the end contrasts dramatically with the f, ff, fff marcato sections. The brilliance of the upper register with the rapidly played motifs (licks of the fire) contrasts markedly with the depth of tone of the ominous held sevenths in the low register (eg., bars 12 - 21). The rapid motifs, arpeggios and runs in all registers (licks of the fire) contribute to the tension throughout. The sustaining pedal is important but must not spoil the staccato and staccatissimo. The rests should be strictly observed.
