Work Overview
This brief work was commissioned by the dedicatees - Gerald Krug
(conductor) and the Western Australia Arts Orchestra, the then
orchestra for the Western Australia Opera, for inclusion in a
concert by the orchestra.
As its name implies, the work is in two sections. The
Image based on two thematic ideas is solemn, sometimes
monolithic. It has been described as inhabiting a still and
melancholy world, like a bleak landscape. Attempts are made to
break the mood with
brighter colours and slivers of light without success, until the
Refraction bends, distorts and combines the
Image themes in music which is assertive, affectionate,
even ardent - the Image as seen through a jocular prism.
