Library shelf no. 783.66547/FID 1 [Available for loan]
Written to 7 poems of the late Leon Gellert (1892-1977), who was
a Lance-Sergeant of the 10th Battalion, landing at Gallipoli on
25 April 1915.
There is a separate 2-3 minute Postlude (probably only suitable for a male singer) - 'The Husband'. The cycle traverses scenes and emotions of the campaign from the landing, through battle, to the leaving when the sore is empty save for the dead.
Instrumentation: High voice, piano.
Duration: 16 min.
Difficulty: Advanced — Wide-ranging vocals, good technical proficiency, demanding musically & vocal stamina
Contents note: The Attack At Dawn -- The Rendezvous -- These Men -- Sights -- Armageddon -- The Cross -- The Last To Leave -- The Husband (postlude to the cycle).
Commission note: Commissioned and written for Ayse Goknur Shanal
The composer notes: The style is by turns dramatic and lyrical. It is also essentially melody driven. The work is sung-through for the entire 16 minutes, but each poem sits individually from the others connected by short codas and/or introductions from the piano.
