Uproar : for at least 11 trombones and 4 bass drums / Andrew Ford.

Work Overview
As in some of my other recent pieces (including The Cloths of Heaven for 10 cornets), Uproar consists of a single melodic line performed freely by a number players who never synchronise their playing. But where in the cornet piece the effect is of a single gleaming smudge of sound, here the aim is something darker and far more dramatic. In both works, the players are encouraged to think of themselves as soloists, but in Uproar they actually sound that way, because the melodic line contains many more short, accented notes that jump out unpredictably from the general soup of trombone sound.
Work Details
Year: 2013
Instrumentation: At least 11 trombones, 3 - 5 of which should be bass trombones, and 4 bass drums.
Duration: 13 min.
Difficulty: Advanced
Commission note: Commissioned by Queensland Conservatorium of Music.
First performance: by Benjamin Marks at BCCMF: Uproar! (St John's Cathedral, Brisbane) on 17 Aug 2013
This piece is intended for 11 trombones, three to five of which are bass trombones. The number of players may be increased, but the ratio of bass to tenor trombones should remain the same. Ideally the players (including the four bass-drummers) will surround the audience. A resonant acoustic, such as a cathedral, is ideal for this piece.
