Work Overview

The Three Mannheimer Duos were written in 1982 for Das Klarinettenduo (David Smeyers and Beate Zelinsky) based in Cologne, who own and play all the instruments of the clarinet family, thereby offering a wide range of possibilities to a composer. The three Duos are interconnected: while one player keeps to the B flat clarinet, the other changes from bass clarinet (first Duo) to the B flat instrument for the central Duo, before playing the basset horn in the final movement. Thus, several different combinations of timbre are heard; each instrument has its own cadenza and for one player there are brief pauses to allow for instrument changes.

Having premiered the Duos in Mannheim (5 March 1983), Smeyers and Zelinsky went on to give first performances in Paris (12 February 1984) and London (9 October 1984). As well as playing them in many German cities (Rellinghausen, Kassel, Darmstadt, Giessen, Essen), they also played the Duos on their 1985 North American tour (Toronto, Richmond and East Lansing, Michigan).
