Work Overview

The Lauros Duos were written between March 1991 and January 1992, and the score was revised in 1998.

The title Lauros requires some explanation: (A) it is a "portmanteau" word combining the names of the two musicians who commissioned and premiered the work. (B) Lauros contains the word aulos, the double reed wind instrument of ancient Greece. Friezes and frescoes of the classical period show it as having twin pipes - it could produce two sounds or even play two parts; this aspect of one-in-two or two-in-oneness, with parts often crossing, is heard in the Duos, especially the first. (C) It is very close to the ancient name of the small island in the Cyclades (Oliaros) where I go every year on vacation. It is possible that some of the archaic simplicity and the bareness of this place, with its splashes of light and colour, is reflected in the Duos.
