Voilà : for viola and piano / Gerald Glynn.
Library shelf no. 787.3/GLY 1 [Available for loan]
Work Overview
I had wanted to write for the viola for many years, and finally composed Voilà for Viola and Piano in 2011 - its title means"There; here it is" in French and is also an anagram for viola in English.
In this work, two particular qualities of the instrument are explored: its ability to play with considerable agility, and the rich beauty of its low register. After a slow, mysterious beginning, the piano and viola begin to interact, often meeting at a common pitch. The role of the piano is to support, comment, provoke and interject, often playing chordal versions of the viola's arpeggios. After much activity, there is a rallentando with the viola insisting on its low notes, against repeated chords on the piano.
