Work Overview

Free! was composed for the Southern Cross Philharmonia Orchestra, to be performed by them under conductor Gerald Gentry in October 2008. The work was inspired by the rescue of Columbian/French politician and activist Ingrid Betancourt, and fourteen other hostages, from capitivity in the Columbian jungle, where they had been held by FARC members for six years, in July 2008. The work is to some extent programmatic, but was inspired at least as much by the composer's thoughts on the many emotional states that could potentially be involved in such a situation as by the actual sequence of events.
