This version of Waltzing Matilda has been inspired by the stunning vocal sound and ability of Finnish vocal group Rajaton.
Instrumentation: For unaccompanied 6-part vocal group (Soprano I, Soprano II, Alto, Tenor, Baritone, Bass)
Duration: 7 min.
Difficulty: Advanced — Several key changes
Dedication note: Dedicated to Rajaton
First performance: by Rajaton — 22 May 11. Canberra Theatre
The piece incorporates a rich blench of jazz, classical and pop into this popular Australian folk song. The melody and harmony have been re-imagined to become more lyrical, and includes a new bridging passage in a quasi-jazz style to build the piece into the final verse. This arrangement has been inspired by Rajaton's 'Butterfly' and 'Dobbin's Flowery Vale'.
Winner of the Canberra International Music Festival Young Composer Awards 2009
