Crystal Amulet is a set of sonic renditions reflecting different qualities of light, structure
and colour in five gemstones. The listener is invited to contemplate the crystallisation of
time captured in these ancient and beautiful pieces of transparent solid matter.
Year: 2001, this version: 2012
Instrumentation: Piano, didjeridu.
Duration: 11 min.
Difficulty: Advanced — Entire suite advanced difficulty but individual movents range from grades 5 to 8 approx.
Dedication note: for John Handel
Harmonies and dissonances are developed over static tonal centres which can accommodate a sensitive didjeridu player. Influences stem from extended Jazz chords and Spanish flavours.
The pieces explore modal colour with edge above the didjeridu drone pitches. The didj part is carefully arranged to weave in and out of the piano's phrasing. The didj's vocalisations create an exciting interplay of rhythm and texture.
