Work Overview

Ancient Cedar Trees is a transcription for solo trumpet in B flat of the central movement of my solo flute work, In the Utter Darkness (1983). The transcription was done as part of a solo trumpet recording project, Improvisations and Comprovisations (Wirripang, 2013), a collaboration with Scott Tinkler (trumpet) and Mic Deacon (co-composer, audio engineer and co-producer). The project involved recording trumpet improvisations preformed by Scott under my direction as well as making "comprovisations" of some of this material, essentially creating compositions from improvised material using digital audio editing software. One of the directed improvisation ideas I had was to ask Scott to improvise on a fully notated piece of music. I felt that the central movement of my flute piece was a suitable vehicle for this exercise and so wrote it out a fifth lower than written for flute, so that it would sit within the range of the trumpet.
