Work Overview
Garland Piece was one of nine short pieces written to
form a "Garland for Peter Sculthorpe on the occasion of his
fiftieth birthday", and performed at the end of a
Seymour Group concert in the Recording Hall of the Sydney Opera
House on 28 April, 1979 (the day prior to the landmark
birthday).
The Garland idea was instigated by the artistic director of the
Seymour Group, Vincent Plush, and presented at the end of the
concert as a surprise to the composer who was in the audience.
The composers of the garland sequence were myself, Ross Edwards,
Gillian Whitehead, Barry Conyngham, Eric Gross, Peter Platt, Ian
Cugley, Anne Boyd and Vincent Plush.
Garland Piece explores chordal textures created by combining
tones produced with different speeds and widths of vibrato.
Michael Hannan
