My favourite Australian art song repertoire
Posted by Australian Music Centre on 22 July, 2013
The AMC asked leading practitioners to select their favourite Australian art song repertoire, to provide delegates to the 2013 International Conference of Vocal Teachers (Brisbane 2013) with an introduction to this rich and diverse landscape.
Inspired by the scales and rhythms of Middle Eastern music, this extended, wordless solo work is extremely engaging. Range from E below the stave to F at the top of the stave. Melodic, expressive, and appealing, quite simple musically, alternating between declamatory “sacred” sections and exuberant “belly-dance” sections. Takes singers out of the comfort zone of Major keys and classical Western performance traditions. Changes of dynamics, mood, articulation, and tone colour provide plenty of challenge and variety.
