Work Overview

The Prelude is the third of a series of pieces for flute or alto flute as preferred. As the title may suggest, there is a close connection to the music of Bach. Rather than recall Bach's music for solo flute the Prelude draws more on the composer's writing for solo violin. In particular, the wide registral skips within the context of unfolding sequences are strongly evocative of techniques favoured by Bach in his music for solo violin.
