An introspective piece in C minor, the Prelude concentrates on the lower register and leans towards harmonies with wide spacings. The Fugue that follows is a happy piece cast in the deliberately contrasting key of C Major. Taken as a whole, the Prelude and Fugue comes across as a highly optimistic composition.
The premiere was given in a concert that formed part of the 2010 Sydney Cancer Conference hosted by the University of Sydney.
The "darkness" of the Prelude followed by the "light" of the Fugue has a special relevance to a conference devoted to finding a cure for cancer.
Instrumentation: Piano, flute, bassoon.
Duration: 7 min.
First performance: by Orana Trio — 15 Jul 10. Sydney Cancer Conference, University of Sydney
