Work Overview

Written in 1929 when the composer herself was only 16, this is a character sketch of her sister Pauline, then 12 or 13. It depicts Pauline's 'vivacity and delightful sense of humour' (words of the composer). When Miriam Hyde recorded Pauline in 1987, she played it with much elasticity of tempo, reflecting the chromatic shaping and different moods of the short episodes. Bars 1-10 are like an introduction, slightly slower than the bright main tempo which is approximately h = 112 from bar 11 (i.e. more virtuosic than it may look on paper, and suitable for AMEB Grade 8).
