Work Overview

Purple Prelude, written in 1996, had a curious beginning. I was on the plane from Adelaide to Sydney, sitting next to a friend pianist and we were discussing the project we had just finished, as well as general repertoire. Somehow the conversation turned to Rachmaninov at which point this distinctly Russian melody just entered my head and started growing. When I got home, it developed into a piece.

It is based on a very minimal motif based on 3 notes.

Title, with its allusion to "purple patches", suggests going off on a tangent. Later I made a version of it for an ensemble for CD "Clocks". And much later I wrote Piano Concerto 2 which started with a very similar material.
