Work Overview

Composed especially for David Bollard, this piece holds a particular place for me. I think it is, at least, partly because of the internal nature of its exploration and partly because of the compositional challenges it posed. At every turn I found the going difficult, as the basic material seemed to offer so many options and directions. Unusually for me, I made four or five substantial beginning drafts. Even then, in the final draft, I kept adjusting and refining certain details to both improve the crafting and establish a form with which I felt satisfied. I think, because I tried to express a number of internal states of mind rather than convey, say, a narrative of some kind, establishing an appropriate pacing was elusive. I'm aware that my musical language includes recurring bird call symbols, which, in quieter, stiller moments, e.g. at the concluding bars, suggest, to me, a sense of wonder. Whatever else I hoped to make a piano piece with which David could identify and enjoy.
