Strange Meeting is a setting of Wilfred Owen's poem of the same name, and illustrates and underpins the text. The narrative follows the descent of a dead soldier into hell, (or perhaps his last thoughts as he dies), meeting former foes as he does so.
Instrumentation: Flute/piccolo, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, piano, 2 percussion, 2 violins, viola, cello, double bass.
Duration: 13 min.
Difficulty: Advanced — Exposed parts everywhere, florid movement in WW and strings, high trumpet
First performance: at Synaesthesia Triple Bill at Mudfest 2013 (Union House Theatre, University of Melbourne) on 22 Aug 2013
The harmonic langugage is broadly octatonic.
The percussion part could possibly be managed by one player with the right setup.
