The work is a double metaphor on the Thousand Steps path in the Dandenong Ranges, recognising its popularity as a strenuous walk, and its role as a memorial for those who suffered on the Kokoda track. The technical demands and musical language are deliberately geared to non-professional players, while not compromising artistic goals.
Instrumentation: 2222-2221-timp-str The trumpet parts are in C, but can be played on Bflat instruments.
Duration: 10 min.
Difficulty: Medium — Targeted at capable community players.
Commission note: Commissioned by the Maroondah Symphony Orchestra for its 50th anniversary.
