'Place' was commissioned by the Four Winds Festival through a generous donation from the Keir Foundation. The 50-minute work premiered at the Four Winds Festival Bermagui, NSW, in April 2010, featuring the Andrea Keller Quartet with Flinders [string] Quartet. The work was staged in an outdoor amphitheatre, drawing inspiration from the area surrounding Bermagui, and exploring notions of belonging and identity. Combining electronics, improvisation, preparations and acoustic instruments, the work is in seven parts and intends to reflect its natural surroundings and at other times become part of its tapestry.
A selection of movements appear on the album 'Wave Rider' by the Andrea Keller Quartet with string quartet. The final movement 'Belonging' appears on the album 'Family Portraits' by Andrea Keller solo piano. The work has not been recorded in its entirety.
Instrumentation: Trumpet, tenor saxophone, piano, drums, electronics, 2 violins, viola, cello.
Duration: 50 min.
Contents note: From Nature’s Fabric -- Guluga I & II -- Drying Up -- Black Swan -- Wondrous Extravagance -- Wave Rider -- Belonging.
