The music is derived from a folk song of the Jiangxi Province, China, a region where Lushan stands.
Instrumentation: 3 flutes (all doubling piccolos), 3 oboes (3rd doubling cor anglais), 2 clarinets, bass clarinet (doubling clarinet in E flat), 2 bassoons, contra-bassoon, 4 horns in F, 3 trumpets in B flat, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, percussion (3 players), harp, piano, strings.
