Work Overview
This is a single-movement sonata consisting of several contrasting musical ideas. Succession of vigorous marcato chords, for example, ranging in length from very short staccato bursts to longer sustained durations, are often juxtaposed with very rapid scurrying patterns that in turn may be followed by cantabile type of homophony, or very light and airy pianissimo figures, superimposed on long sustained static harmony. These diverse ideas are then further contrasted either by slow, tranquil polyphonic textures, or by bright and fast sections, based on asymmetrical additive rhythms, strengthened by accents. These contrasting musical ideas are then subjected during the process of composition to a number of transformations and repeated several times, each time in different juxtapositions to each other, yet there exist various underlying factors that unify these otherwise diverse materials. Contrasting ideas, for example, often complement each other, forming thus larger unified groups. They are also closely related through the use of common pitch and other material.
