Work Overview

The opening of In this Day and Age was an idea I had before I was commissioned to write a fanfare by the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. The blaring trumpet and drums seemed to be an ideal beginning for an orchestral fanfare. Whilst the instrumentation here is typical of a heraldic trumpet call, (for example, Handel's Music for the Royal Fireworks or Alfred Newman's 20th Century Fox fanfare), the rhythms have been dramatically mutated.
In addition to these rhythmic passages that lace the piece, there are improvised moments - players are asked to play notes randomly to a given rhythm, - this was my "Australianism" in the piece, a kind of "make it up as we go" idea.
The piece is predominately optimistic - as most fanfares are, there are however, quiter moments of reflection.
