Work Overview

"Snapshots was commissioned by Adam Unsworth for his most recent CD of new music for horn. When starting to work on it, I had worries that in this short, fast-paced piece there would be no room for me to show off all the sides of Adam's distinctive technique. It did not feel right to me to focus on just one image or pattern. Therefore, I came up with the following concept: I took snapshots of my favorite features of Adam's playing, combining them with the similar features of my piano technique and the most characteristic elements of my compositional style. When put together, these snapshots form a dynamic and lively album."

Adam asked me to write this piece as a CD opener that would be virtuosic, "over the top."
