Credo : SS(S)AATTBB choir
by Clare Maclean (2008)
Library shelf no. 782.3232/MAC 5 [Not for loan]
This Credo is part of the Osanna Mass, which is based on the set of plainchants for the Mass, Kyriale IX, and several Jewish liturgical melodies. The Kyriale does not contain a credo chant, so the one used here is the oldest known credo chant, the first one in the Liber Usualis. Interwoven with the chant are a number of other melodies with symbolic associations with the credo text. The first is a melody commonly used for the Jewish 'credo', Sh'ma Yisrael: "Hear O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One" (Deuteronomy 6:4). There are several references to other movements in the mass, including the chant for the Agnus Dei (heard in its entirety in the tenor part), as well as fragments of the Easter chorale melody O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden and the gospel song, Near the Cross.
