Work Overview
The title of this piece refers to a Kyrie plainchant melody, fragments of which appear periodically, and the entire melody is played by the vibraphone near the end of the piece. The call of a Sydney bird (possibly a magpie) is heard intermittently in the melodic lines, and some chords are influenced by the sounds of bells. The many rising figures, which are an expansion of the three note rising motif of the Kyrie chant, are intended to suggest the rising of incense, symbolic of prayer and transience.
