Work Overview

This piece is a rewriting of the classic Australian folksong with words by Banjo Paterson. It incorporates the well-known tune, the 'Queensland tune', a modern new tune, and an ongoing chant on Bb of Aboriginal botanical words. The words of the chant relate to trees and plants which would be found around the central focus of this song; the billabong. All of these tunes and chants weave together in a lively, rhythmic piece.

Work Details

Year: 2007, this version: 2011

Instrumentation: TTBarB choir.

The composer notes the following styles, genres, influences, etc associated with this work:
Earthy modern folksong arrangement. Aboriginal chant.

This piece can be performed with a Bb didjeridu. The dideridu starts with a solo, then plays through until the end of Bar 32. It starts again half-way through bar 76 (where a short solo is optional), and plays through with increasing vigour until the end. Clapsticks can also be added where marked in the score.

The SSAA choir with accompaniment version starts with didjeridu, then 4 choirs sing the song at different levels of difficulty. There is a line for junior singers, one general line for singers, and two for SSAA choirs, where one version is easier than the other. The taiko players provide effects with leaves and shakers, and come in at the end for a big finish. Clapsticks can be played by any singer.
