Work Overview

This Sonatina was written in 2011, and revised in 2012 with attention to making it easily playable by student pianists. To this end, the composer has added fingerings and other suggestions for the player.
The first movement is very much set in the traditional sonata-allegro mold. Truly postmodern, it makes judicious use of bitonality and similar harmonic techniques. The different registers of the piano are exploited for colouristic effects. The second movement is a piece of dance-inspired fun, using miniature variations, sharp contrasts and some unusual harmonic progressions. The third movement takes the form of a fantasy-rondo on
an Australian folk song.
