Work Overview
If I open the door has an interesting background story. I was attending an interview with the Principal of Cannon Hill Anglican College, here in Brisbane, in relation to a position as choir conductor and singing teacher at the school. While waiting for my interview, I was given the latest Year Book to peruse. Flicking through the pages, I came across some student poetry and was immediately drawn to a particular poem titled "If I open the door". It included some really touching words about the struggles that some students, if indeed not all of us, face at some time in our lives. Following the interview, I took the book home, because the words on the page had become so deeply imprinted in my mind, and there were also some musical ideas forming. After a weekend of composing creativity, I began my new job ( yes, the interview was successful) at the college and sought out the writer of this poem. Rachael, at that time, was a Year 10 student and was part of the music program. It was all meant to be - what a gift I received that day!
