Work Overview
Bloodmoon October was written for pianist Aron Kallay for the piano series Piano Spheres. The title of the piece refers to the lunar eclipse "Blood Moon" that took place in October 2014, the period in which it was written. The giant red moon illuminated the sky with a ghostly, magnetic, eerie aura like nature's rendition of Olaf Elliason's The Weather Project, where a giant artificial sun was suspended from the heights of the Tate gallery's Turbine Hall. This otherworldly moon, observed during month of October, could be seen from both California and New South Wales, on both sides of the Pacific Ocean, creating a link between the Australian composer and American performer. It was the unsettling world of the strange and rare moon that inspired the atmosphere of the piece. The music waxes and wanes with the luminosity of a pointillistic melody that emerges from within a relentless eighth note pulse. The piece is about pure colour gradually changing and hints at rustic, folk, dance music to illustrate the celebratory, earthen phenomena, venerating nature's mysteries in a modern day ritual.
