Work Overview
Commissioned for double cello octet for the 25th anniversary of The Amsterdam cello 8tet, Sphinx is written for duo between a live and filmed ensemble. When asked to write the piece, this proposition immediately evoked thoughts and ideas about conundrums, magic tricks or riddles, where live players appeared to be in communication with their filmed counterpart and space seemed to extend beyond the four walls of the concert space in mirror image to the stage. There is something mysterious and intriguing about the double octet, something that on the surface seems simple and straightforward, yet behind the seemingly accessible surface lies a puzzle, one that, when pieced together correctly, may draw you unsuspectingly into a virtual world to be lost in an unnamed altered reality.
