Work Overview

Late in 2015, David Scott Hamnes told me of his plans to record several of the fine old pipe organs in the north of Tasmania, and encouraged me to write specifically for them. This piece is for no specific organ, but restricts its range and use of different stops and could be played on virtually any of the organs proposed.

On the other hand (and quite unusually) I have chosen to write for a specific didjeridu. I fashioned the instrument in question from Tasmanian blackwood Acacia melanoxylon. It plays a fundamental D and provides two very distinct and quite easily played "hoots". One on F# and a higher one on C# as shown in the score. Any didjeridu with this configuration would be suitable, although such an instrument may be difficult to come by. There may be ways to arrange the score for alternative didjeridus, but I have not at this stage attempted to do so.
