Work Details

Year: 2000, this version: 2015

Instrumentation: Basso profondo accompanied by a MIDI keyboard controlling audio software.Any 5 octave (61 note) MIDI keyboard and any reasonable audio software can be used.

Duration: 4 min.

Difficulty: Medium — Very low - down to B. Rhythmically tricky - probably easier for the singer to accompany himself

Dedication note: For Sarah Lloyd

The composer notes the following styles, genres, influences, etc associated with this work:
Microtonal music in general. Just intonation.

This piece (a rewrite of a piece for choir and keyboard from 2000) is written using a 24 tone/octave scale of my own invention in the ancient system known as just intonation. This provides me with rich new harmonies. It is not a complicated piece but the rhythm does move around between 5/4, 5/8 and 5/16 to reflect the jerky movements of a heron. As a singer I have found that the strange tuning does not bother me at all, and it is fun to sing.
