Work Overview
When it came to choosing titles for these pieces, various single-word possibilities came to mind such as Inertia, Angst, X (standing for Generation - X), Apathy, Indolence. I initially opted for Lethargy for the rather trite reason that it rhymes with a more commonly used title - Elegy. On reflection, this choice proved to be quite opportune in that while an elegy can be characterised as a song of lament (usually for the dead), these Lethargies each begin with an emotional state that, for me personally, I often find lamentable. In writing these pieces, it has been my objective to vanquish this mood, replacing it with one that nurtures self- reflection only to the extent that such reflection might facilitate a desire to explore, with greater self-knowledge, the complexities and manifold diversities inherent in most musical and extra-musical phenomena.
