Work Overview
Acuérdate de mí or 'Remember Me' was especially arranged for David Kram (Head of Opera Department, Faculty of the Victorian College of the Arts, The University of Melbourne) and Colombian mezzo-soprano Ursula Paez Zapata as part of 'New Worlds, New Spaces: An Intercultural Project in Three Languages' presented at Federation Hall (Victorian College of the Arts) and The Ian Potter Centre (National Gallery of Victoria) Melbourne, Australia. "Inspired by the artwork of Australian and European-born artists on display at the Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, this multi-lingual project explores the themes of Australia as a 'new world' alongside live music, poetry and text recitals performed in French, German and Spanish music and language students." The text of Acuérdate de mí deals with the perpetuity of memories, and the state of ambiguity and disquietude associated with the notion of lost identity. The work is structured around the rhythmic designs of Chacarera - a folk dance and music from the northwest of Argentina originating during the 19th century. The usual instrumentation of the Chacarera consists of guitar, violin, accordion and bombo (Andean cylindrical-shaped double-headed drum).
