Work Overview
'Fanfare de mémoire' or 'Fanfare of Remembrance' is a work for brass quintet that explores mensuration canon compositional techniques. It is essentially an ABA or arch form structure, and employs a 10-bar theme set in augmented canon to the ratio of 1:3:9. This theme is simultaneously introduced by the first trumpet, the tenor trombone and the tuba - the trumpet executing its original form, the tenor trombone its three-fold augmentation, while the tuba, its nine-fold one, with their durations represented within 10, 30 and 90 bars respectively. No other melodic material is introduced throughout the piece, so the artistic challenge becomes one where interest must be developed via different contrapuntal uses of this distinct melody. The mode employed is the Lydian mode in the key of Bb, which initially modulates to Dm (D natural minor) in the B section, to then climax in the return of the A section in the key of C major (a complete major second transposition).
