These five short pieces were written in order to explore the wide
range, the versatility and agility, and also the expressive
qualities of the Bb clarinet. The first bagatelle features the
use of short fragments of chromatic scale passages that coalesce
into various formations creating melodic and rhythmic variety
within the confines of this semi-tone based scale.
The second bagatelle focuses on the use of intervals of the minor second and major seventh, intervals that are traditionally considered quite dissonant, and explores their melodic potential within a simple ternary structure created out of slow, quite reflective, outer sections that contrast with a more lively central section. The third bagatelle is very fast in tempo and makes use of a rondo-like structure that allows for three repeated statements of a section that features rapid arpeggiated passages, that arc across the wide range of the instrument, interspersed with two other sections that feature variations of fragmentary melodic material. The fourth bagatelle is in two sections: it explores
contrasting meter, primarily 5/8 and 6/8, in a slow tempo in the first section, and then features a lilting melodic motif in a more regular 6/8 meter in the second section. The final bagatelle is very fast in tempo and very rhythmic, with the music propelled forward by the use of alternating bars of 11/8 and 13/8 throughout. These 'additive' rhythmic structures allow for the constant alternation between long and short beats that keep the music sounding a little off-balance but always driving forward towards the inevitable climactic moments.
