The first performance of this piece was at a beach at sunrise and I have, therefore, tried to ensure that the character of the music reflects, in some ways, the geographical setting and the circumstances surrounding the early morning performance. To this end the music moves from a slow and mysterious beginning, evoking the pre-dawn light, towards a confident and positive ending that is meant to coincide with the arrival of the sun's rays over the beach.
Instrumentation: SATB choir.
Duration: 5 min.
Commission note: Commissioned by Sydney Philharmonia.. Commissioned by Sydney Philharmonia for 'Dawn Chorus', an event presented as part of the Sydney Festival, 2009
First performance: by Sydney Philharmonia — 10 Jan 09. Balmoral Beach, Sydney
Texts taken from writings of Li Po (701-762): 'Farewell to Meng Hao-jan' and 'The Hard Road'.
