Work

Aubade : for soprano saxophone with piano and/or percussion ensemble

by Simon Reade (2010)

Work Overview

Aubade is the first movement of my Sonata no. 2 for alto saxophone and piano (2008/09). I transcribed this movement in February 2010 for Ben Price to play on soprano saxophone - the movement is written in extreme high register for the alto saxophone, and in some ways is better suited to the soprano.

In 2014 Ben suggested that my Sonata no. 2 could be orchestrated into a concerto. While I was interested in the idea, the middle movement of the Sonata is in fact already a recomposition of my tenor saxophone concerto, Still Time - so I did not want to rework this music again.

For reasons unknown I then decided that this Aubade needed a more defined personality of its own. I didn't wish to orchestrate fully as the accompaniment is so distinctively pianistic - instead I have added a colouristic percussion ensemble which could add to OR replace the piano part.
