Work Overview

This Concertino for saxophone, piano and ensemble is drawn from the third movement of my Sonata no. 2 (2009) for alto saxophone and piano, titled Morning at last... after the poem of Philip Larkin. I decided to transcribe the work for soprano saxophone with piano and ensemble. The piece has been extended through repetition by setting the ensemble's alto saxophone as a kind of second soloist. The original material is presented in the Allegro by the alto before being taken up in a new "key" area by the soprano. This method is then employed throughout. When I composed my Sonata no. 2 I was influenced in it's orchestration by lessons I had when a student at the Tasmanian Conservatorium with Russell Gilmour - specifically the use of unison doubling of the melody line with piano. In this orchestration, I have taken this a step further by unison, as well as some octave doubling across the ensemble. The piece is essentially in two parts throughout - two parts in intense perpetual motion.

I revised the work slightly in March/April of this year to allow for performance by either soprano or alto saxophone solo, piano with optional ensemble - to make the piece, I hope, more useful to Ben in his developing solo career. I was influenced in the revision by the wonderful artistry of Michael Kieran Harvey, for whom the piano part is now composed. Morning at last... is dedicated to my good friend, Benjamin Price.
