Work Overview
Composed between November 2007 and January 2008 and based on a fragment from my second Symphony of 2000/01, this Sonata for string orchestra was composed for the Hobart Chamber Orchestra to be performed at a concert of new Tasmanian compositions in May of 2008. Sonata was inspired in part by a dramatic thunderstorm in December 2007, whilst staying in Devonport in northern Tasmania. The thunder and lightning coming across Bass Strait dominated my senses across the hours of the night, making sleep impossible. I have attempted to overlay this 'storm' music across the framework of a traditional sonata structure - the two music's competing with, as well as complimenting each other.
I incorportated this work, modified slightly, into the revised version of my Symphony 2 in 2013.
