Work Overview
These four songs are all quite recent, two from my settings of Michael Dransfield for alto voice and piano, two instrumental songs written more recently and originally for my own instrument, the 'cello.
I have reworked these songs for what essentially is clarinet and piano, however in the spirit of the romantic period, I have given other performance options (as was the want of composers and publishers in the 19th century). Perhaps also in the spirit of gaining a performance - a very 21st century concern for a composer.
The cycle is written 'hommage à Robert Schumann' in tribute to that great composer of both Lieder as well as wind chamber music. Additionally, the combination of clarinet, viola and piano is tribute to one of my very favourite works - "hommage à R. Sch." by György Kurtág.
