Work Overview

Dating from 1982, this work was originally written for oboe and guitar. Its character was influenced in the first instance by the nature of the oboe. That instrument can sound hard and uncompromising - eminently suited to creating the mood of an incantation; yet it can also produce a feeling of playfulness. The arrangement for clarinet and guitar changes the medium but not the message.

The sounds produced on the guitar are totally different from those of any sustaining instrument. Its role in this work is correspondingly different, but not simply that of an accompanist: in the opening recitative it urges the 'singer'/clarinet away from introversion towards more activity, from which point it takes the leading part. Soon afterwards it reverts to being an equal partner.

Mandala in Hindu means magic circle. A mandala is always symmetrical and contemplation of it is meant to bring inner peace. This shape and structure is heard at various times in the form of movement around a central note.
